Supported living

Cartrefi Cymru supports people to lead fulfilled lives, at home and in the community.  One of the most common ways in which we do this is by providing 24 hour support to people with a learning disability, living together as tenants in their own home.Stephen and Chris

The number of people living together is always very small, and the house or flat is as indistinguishable as possible from other ordinary accommodation in the area.  This helps to avoid someone's home becoming an institution, and promotes community integration.

We generally employ a small team of support staff dedicated to each individual group of tenants, although sometimes a team can support people living in a small number of addresses within a local area.  We are currently supporting 245 people with learning disabilities living in 97 locations all over Wales.

This type of 24/7 support is often called "supported living".  However, as it often involves providing personal care to people in their own homes, it is known officially as "domiciliary care".  We are therefore registered as a domiciliary care agency with the Care and Social Services Inspectorate for Wales.

The type of support delivered is flexible and person-centred and can cover most aspects of people's lives where support is needed.  For example, as well as providing support with personal care or healthy living, the support will generally also include household management, personal finances, skills and independence, rights and responsibilities, and community interaction.

Our support living staff will often play a major role in supporting tenants to maintain their tenancies.  But please note that we do not own people's houses and we are not a landlord.

People usually live in properties owned by registered social landlords, and we work closely with the landlords and with the local Social Services and Housing departments as required, but always with a view to enabling the tenant to do as much as they can for themselves.
