Dr Martin O'Neill

Martin O'Neill

I currently work as Research Development Officer at The Welsh Institute of Social and Economic, Research Data and Methods (WISERD) at Cardiff University.

Originally from the Gurnos Estate in Merthyr Tydfil, I left school early with few qualifications.  I then followed a varied career trajectory that took me to live in various parts of the UK and where I eventually ended up working for the NHS.  Following a career in the Health Service and in my late thirties, I decided to return to education to pursue a degree which eventually led to the successful completion of a Ph.D.  Having come in to higher education later in life with a wealth of life experience I was intent on not becoming just one of those academics that sits in an ivory tower.  It is very important to me that academics make a contribution to everyday life.  Having had experience of living in an area categorised as disadvantaged and having worked in the health service, I had life experience of how private troubles can sometimes be exacerbated by public issues.

My research interests have always been in the fields of health, well-being and social care and so I was more than happy to accept when the opportunity arose to become a Trustee of Cartrefi Cymru.  I hope to be able to contribute to the organisation by increasing research expertise and capacity so as to be able to improve the evidence base and theservices provided by Cartrefi Cymru.
