My day as an Area Manager

I have recently been appointed as the Area Manager for the 'Henllan Project'; this is a new development for 12 service users in the Denbigh area. We are working in partnership with the Local Authority and Wales and West Housing Association to offer supported living tenancies to young adults with learning disabilities, autistic spectrum disorder and physical disabilities.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work with the service users and their families to build up bespoke services in their homes on their terms.  We are working together to recruit  and train the teams; the standards are very high and the new support workers bringing a diverse range of skills and interests that, I believe, will significantly contribute to our Person Centred Active Support. I am already very proud to be part of the team, to represent Cartrefi and to be developing relationships with the service users. I believe that our services users will good neighbours for the local community of Henllan and that the staff can support them to live enriched lives within their community.

No day is the same for me -some days I am on a building site looking at the environmental issues, on other days I can be me working with service users planning the transition of moving into their new home; and sometimes I may be recruiting or delivering training in Positive Behaviour Management or Autism. In addition I continue to work on my professional development , studying long distance with Birmingham University for a Post Graduate MSc in Autism and an ILM 5 in management.

Whatever the day I usually have fun, variety and one hundred percent job satisfaction and I know that I can look forward to a completely different day the following day. My desk is never cleared but I try each day to work at maximum capacity and take satisfaction in knowing that we are making progress. I feel very privileged to be part of our service user's lives and in working with them and the team towards the best outcomes for them all.

I am Jez James and I am UNISON's convenor in Cartrefi.  In other words I am the senior steward, I help, advise and work with the other UNISON stewards to ensure members are properly represented and their voices heard within the workplace and in Cartrefi.

UNISON has been fortunate to have been able to develop exellent working relations through Cartrefi's Chief Executive, Adrian and his managers and we know that all that matters relating to our members will be heard and addressed.

This doesn't mean we are management's friends and carry out what the company want.  It means that there is a mutual respect and trust in the work both sides need to do and a confidence in knowing matters will be dealt with.
